Synopsis
Odd people out is a film about the process of marginalization, repression and denial of the gay community during the first two decades of the Cuban Revolution, through the eyes of the Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas. He is the main character in an account by other writers and artists who were part of his life, and who were also punished and persecuted by the Communist régime. The frustration of those who were initially fierce supporters of the revolution and the absolute freedoms it implied, the male chauvinism inherent in every traditionally Catholic society, the brutality of some of the mechanisms of power in Latin America, the systematic destruction of an artist's work as a technique for alienation and the perversity of a demagogic dictatorship are some the themes of this account of a creative and a vital failure: the story of a group of people whose existence has been denied to the point that officially, they never even existed and became non-persons.

Seres extravagantes es un documental que narra el proceso de marginación, represión y negación de los homosexuales durante las dos primeras décadas de la revolución cubana a través de la biografía del escritor cubano Reinaldo Arenas. Reinaldo Arenas es el protagonista de una historia contada por aquellos escritores y artistas que compartieron su vida y que también participaron de la persecución y el castigo del régimen. La frustración de la libertad esencial revolucionaria, el machismo inherente a una sociedad tradicional, la brutalidad de los mecanismos del poder en Latinoamérica, la destrucción sistemática de la obra de un autor como técnica de alienación y la perversidad de un régimen demagógico componen las tramas de este relato de un fracaso creativo y vital: la historia de unos individuos sistemáticamente negados hasta el punto de no existir, de convertirse en no-personas.
