Synopsis
Archbishop Romero lived and died by the commandment "Thou shalt not kill", and it was this unwavering belief that claimed his life. On March 24, 1980 he was assassinated while giving a funeral mass in the Cathedral of San Salvador. The Archbishop's assassination triggered one of the bloodiest civil wars in Latin American history, a war that claimed more than 70,000 lives. His political outspokenness made the Vatican very uncomfortable, and made him a thorn in the side for the United States, which massively supported El Salvador's anti-communist regime with weapons and military advisors. Following his death, Romero became truly incarnated in the lives and hopes of the believing poor of El Salvador.
