LaCinemaFe Film Festival: 2004 Awards

After careful consideration of the 14 films in competition at the THIRD LACINEMAFE Film Festival of New York, the members of the Jury of the Official Competition in the Fiction Feature Film category: Basil Tsiokos, Maria Rivera, and Margarita De la Vega-Hurtado, have decided to award the “Apples” to:

OFFICIAL COMPETITION
1.The Silver Apple for Best Actor to ABEL AYALA, the young interpreter of the protagonist of El Polaquito by Juan Carlos Desanzo, from Argentina, for his commitment and skill in depicting a young man in search for a place in life.

2.The Silver Apple for Best Actress to JULIETA ORTIZ, for her role as Dolores in Dirt, by Nancy Savoca, from the United States and El Salvador, for her portrayal of a woman who supports her family and bridges two cultures. She really brings into the light the invisible workers amongst us.

3.An Honorable Mention to EL POLAQUITO, by Juan Carlos Desanzo (Argentina) for its clarity of vision, economy of means and purposeful depiction of a harsh reality.

4.The Silver Apple for Best Director to HEITOR DAHLIA, from Brazil, for Nina for its creativity, visual flair and dynamism in an impressive debut feature.

5.The Gold Apple for Best Film to a film that tells with honesty and simplicity a moving story about a region divided by political conflict and violence, a familiar situation to many Latin Americans, PALOMA DE PAPEL, the first film by Fabrizio Aguilar from Peru.

DOCUMENTARY
The members of the Jury of the Official Competition in the Documentary category: Adelfa Martinez, Carlos Gutierrez, and Judith Escalona, have decided to award the “Apples” to:

1.An Honorable Mention to CUANDO LA MUERTE NOS VISITÓ, by Yanara Guayasamín (Ecuador)

2.The Gold Apple for Best Documentary to GALINDEZ, by Ana Diez (Spain)

SHORT COMPETITION
The members of the Jury of the Official Competition in the Short category: Pedro Valiente, Lucila Moctezuma and Rogelio Azcarraga , have decided to award the “Apples” to:

1.An Honorable Mention to ALGUIEN MATÓ ALGO, by Jorge Navas (Colombia)

2.The Gold Apple for Best Short to TERMINAL, by Aitzol Aramaio (Spain)

1967 - In the Republic of Miranda, an imaginary country that lives under a dictatorship, Arcibel Alegría is a journalist who writes about chess. He is imprisoned as a political prisoner due to a confusion in the diagramation of the newspaper in which he works. Arcibel, who until that point considered himself as apolitical, quite lonely, married and divorced, with a daughter of two year old, starts to understand in jail an unknown reality to him.


1967 - en la República de Miranda, país imaginario que vive bajo una dictadura, el periodista Arcibel Alegría escribe sobre ajedrez. Es encarcelado como preso político por culpa de una confusión en la diagramción del diario en el que trabaja. Arcibel, que hasta ese momento se consideró un hombre apolítico, bastante solitario, casado y separado, con una hija de dos años, comenzará a conocer en la cárcel una realidad que le era ajena.
